Appearance: Matt has red hair that isn't quite long enough to be called long but not that short either; it tends to go all over the place and get in his eyes a lot. Or it would, if he didn't wear goggles almost all the time. He started wearing them when he was racing cars and just kept them. He thinks they look cyberpunk and give him a unique style.

He's short for a guy, only 5'6”, and fairly slender: your typical geek build, complete with the pale skin that shouts that he hardly ever sees the sun, with the odd sense of fashion one would expect of a guy who decided wearing goggles constantly looked cool.

Personality: He's a pretty laidback and casual guy, most of the time at least. Things tended to come easy to him and he never saw any point in working harder for things that didn't. He doesn't form deep connections to other people easily, but when he does, he's intensely loyal. Matt has a dorky sense of humor and enjoys pranks, even if he's the victim - if they're impressive enough. It takes some doing to impress him, however.

Abilities/Strengths: Matt is a skilled hacker and good with electronics in general; he hasn't met the thing he can't take apart and put back together. He's good at building and customizing cars and computers and not too bad with guns and explosives, though he prefers being back-up to being the person right up in the action. He's not bad at racing and stunt driving, either.

Weapons: He has a pistol, but Matt considers his primary weapon to be his computer.

Weaknesses: For one, he's just a human, and hence as fragile as any human. He doesn't really know much about hand-to-hand combat either. He'd do just about anything for the few people he really cares for, but can't be arsed to bother with those he doesn't. Matt's also very lazy, so will let things slide when he sometimes shouldn't.

History: Mail “Matt” Jeevas started life in London, only son of a single mother. They didn't have much money, but it wasn't a bad life, until his mother got sick. Really sick, and she didn't get better, no matter what the doctors did. He was too young to really understand what was going on, but he heard adults talking and at least grasped that he'd soon be on his own. So he wasn't surprised when his mother died, not exactly, nor when the older man came to take him away to the orphanage. Where else did he have to go?

To his surprise, this orphanage wasn't too bad. Crazy, the way they pushed the kids to compete with each other and to succeed, but they gave them access to the best technology and far more freedom with methods of accomplishing tasks than you might expect. He didn't mind giving up his real name, either; there was nothing left for it to mean anything. Though he hated giving up the few mementos he had of his mother and cried all night when they took them from him by force.

Matt even made friends there, though he only really cared about one: his best friend, Mello. They both shared a love of pranks and Matt was laidback enough to not be bothered when Mello threw his occasional tantrums. He'd follow him anywhere; even if it were dangerous or scary, it was worth it in the end.

When Mello left, without even a warning, it was like the light went out on his world, leaving everything washed in shades of gray. He was surprised; Matt hadn't even realized he'd grown so dependent on having the other boy. Now he had to figure out what to do on his own and he was at a loss.

He bounced around aimlessly for awhile. He started out moving to New York, making a fake ID claiming he was far older than he really was, and getting a programming job, but that got dull fast. Matt hated the regular schedule and the monotony of 9-5 life. He built his own cars and raced them for awhile and that was fun, but he got bored with it eventually, too. Instead he did freelance hacking and started to seriously look for Mello.

Found him, too, after six months of serious searching. They communicated mostly online and over the phone; only met in person once. Matt helped Mello out behind the scenes, glad for the diversion, but didn't insist on more, at least at first. About the time his patience was really running out, though, Mello told him he was putting his plan to go after Kira into action and cut communication.

After pitching the worst and only fit of his life, Matt tried everything to find him again, but this time he was better hidden. Not unexpected, if he were really going after Kira, but frustrating as hell. At least his search had him nearby when the call came. If he hadn't been... well, he tried not to think about it.

Matt was hardly an expert at medicine, but at least he kept Mello alive. Sometimes he thought the scarring would have been less if he'd been able to get him real medical care, but he did the best he could, especially considering Mello insisted on going to New York and Near almost right away, well before he was in any real shape to travel that far. Matt took him when he became convinced he'd go without him if he didn't, taking his revenge in more subtle ways which mostly involved forcing Mello to take decent care of himself.

Now they're partners, more formally than before. Mello took his failure pretty badly and Matt does his best to keep his spirits up along with offering technical support. Going after Kira now seems almost suicidal, but he can't shake his loyalty, not for something this important. He wasn't really doing anything anyway.
